Lessons from Rabbi Zupnick

Reflections on Rabbi Zupnick’s class this past Shabbos. He covered the strange alliance between religious Jews and traditional Protestants, the incompatibility of materialism with Judaism, feminism versus fairness, and more. The overall message is that we need to be moderate and take care of our physical and emotional needs, but for the sake of Heaven, not as an end unto themselves. My response is that I agree with the message but we should be careful
about rhetoric and broad brush generalizations. There are some aspects of progressivism which are still extremely important, particularly structural change in support of equity for oppressed, marginalized, mistreated, silenced populations. When you look at the world from the perspective of the vulnerable, it’s not about political correctness but simply about justice.
