The brutal Hungarians in 1944, in Sarmas, tortured the Jews, assaulted the women, and made them prepare their own graves before massacring them.
My Zayde (grandfather), may he rest in peace, was a proud Patriot from Romania. He was taken prisoner in a labor camp during the war. He returned to find not only the devastation of Sarmas but that the villagers had been warned by the criminals to remain silent or be massacred themselves.
My Zayde ignored them and proceeded to make sure that the dead were buried, the criminals were prosecuted, and that there was a memorial placed over their graves.
Freedom is not free. We bow our heads to the Lord and pray.
